From the Artist: For this project I used the only piece of tempered glass I had that was not committed to a painting I have already planned. I like bigger paintings. The flower is a hibiscus picked from my garden.

From the Painting Guide: The dimensions of the "leftover" bit certainly fits your subject beautifully. The tall format adds to the sense of elegance of the vase and flower.

Things to Consider When Looking at This Painting:
Composition: A glass vase with twists in its body would throw beautiful light on a background, and having red in the vase which echoes the color flower really adds to the composition. Notice how, in terms of color theory, the green of the leaves is sandwiched between the two bits of its complementary color, red.

Foreground: I find the foreground bland in comparison to the background. Yet when I hold up my hand to crop some of it off, then it feels as if the subject is being squashed in. I wonder if just a little touch of red in it is what it needs?

I like the two little triangles of dark in the corners giving a curve to the surface the base is standing on. This adds visual interest as well as tying the foreground to the shadow through their relative colors, giving a unity to the composition.

Shadow: My initial reaction was that the shadow of the flower and its leaves was too dark in tone, that it was perilously close to overpowering the flower. But as I've been looking at the painting, I've grown to like the intense darkness of the shadow. It's a lovely foil to the flower and the delicate touches of color in the background.
