From the Artist: I was attracted to the color of this potted tulip, and was amazed at the translucency of the petals from back light coming through a glass door. I painted quickly to capture the glowing colors and I think I succeeded somewhat. I wanted to paint another view doing more background work but the tulip faded very fast.

From the Painting Guide: I think you've captured the translucency of the petals beautifully, and the gentle darkening in tone towards the edge of the petals and where petals overlap. This is not to detract from the stem nor leaves, which have a lovely sense of form and texture. I like the soft color and tone of the background, which enables the colors in the petals to really slow, while working with the blues in it (and the leaves).

Things to Consider When Looking at This Painting:
Composition: Notice how the flower and leaves are at an angle, not straight up. It may seem like a small thing, but it makes the composition more dynamic, adding a sense of movement and visual intrigue. If the flower had been set vertically, aligned with the edges of the paper, the composition would be more static.

Negative Space: Spend a moment tracing the negative spaces to the left and right of the flower. The various curves make for interesting shapes, which lead your eye around the composition. If something isn't working in a composition, it often helps to make a thumbnail focusing on the negative space to see if there's anything awkward happening there.
