From the Artist: I became so excited about all the different ways you could paint a pansy in a pot that I did 10 versions using various mediums and paper combinations with pansies in different colors and stages (from buds to dead) each in the little blue pansy pot. I felt this one captured the orange pansy at the stage just past perfect. I almost said past beautiful, but really some of the most beautiful colors and interesting shapes and colors were in the ones almost to the discard stage. Our cool spring ensured a bountiful collection of pansies in the garden.

From the Painting Guide: What glorious colors in this pansy, and the blues of the pot really work well with them (orange/blue complementaries, of course). There's a lovely sense of the delicate texture of the petals, contrasting with the solid feel of the vase and the texture in the background. I think it's a beautiful portrait of a pansy.

Things to Consider When Looking at This Painting:
Composition: Look how having a diagonal line on the background rather than a horizontal line makes for a more dynamic composition. A line parallel with the bottom edge of the canvas would've been far more static. The diagonal line echoes the angle of the flower's stem, and leads your eye down to the base and its shadow.

I wish there'd been a little more space above the flower, which feels a little squashed in to me. This is aggravated by the large area of white in the foreground and below the shadow of the vase. It might be solved by cropping so the shadow goes off the bottom of the composition.
