From the Artist: My aim here was to arrange the strong colors of the blue footstand (my paints container), the green vase, the red flower and curtains against each other and the whitish background. The co-incidental sweep of the curtain matching the angle of the flower was a happy accident.

From the Painting Guide: Considering the composition strictly in terms of this project, to paint a portrait of a flower, I feel the tulip is rather dominated by its environment. I like base, both for the color which works well with the sliver of green of the tulip's stem and for its curves and straight lines which echo those of the tulip.

Things to Consider When Looking at This Painting:
Composition: I would be tempted to crop off the left-hand section of curtain to eliminate the distracting bit of wall on the far left and so it serves more as a backdrop to the flower than an individual element in the painting (like this).

Set-Up vs Painting: It's likely the differences in the set-up and painting arise from the set-up photo having been taken from a different angle to where the painting was created. It's useful as an example of the type of thing to look out for when shifting your position while painting. For instance, look at how the plaited tie-back on the curtain is partly hidden by the vase. At how you don't see into the top of the vase, but rather more of a silhouette.
