From the Artist: As I was doing sketches and drawings for this painting, I kept feeling like I wanted to be small and inferior to the chair. As it was also a time in my life when people seemed to come and go as they pleased I was also feeling a little bit abandoned. So I wanted to allow the chair to be a symbol of this feeling of 'going'. I also wanted all the detail to be in the chair and leave the background somewhat abstracted to allow the viewer to be able to place the chair in their own world.

From the Painting Guide: I think there's a lovely sense of height, both of the chair floating in space and the chair moving up above me as I look at it. The background is compelling and visually intriguing, not flat and boring. The touches of yellow/green in the bottom give a unity to the composition and encourage my eye to travel around the whole canvas. Lovely color and tones on the chair too.

I wonder whether there should possibly have been a little more space above the chair, about half as much again? To give a sense of it having quite a bit further it could still go.
