From the Artist: After a recent downpour I took several shots of this Gerber Daisy in my yard. I like to use my own photos as references for my work whenever possible.

From the Painting Guide: I also like to paint from my own reference photos, partly because it eliminates any copyright issues and partly because I enjoy playing with my camera. But I also realize not everyone has the time or inclination, which is why I created the galleries of artist's reference photos. But, admittedly, I don't have many photos of flowers from our garden because we've mainly got low-maintenance and drought-resistant shrubs. Your painting makes me want to rush out an buy some seeds so that next spring there'll be some color in amongst the greenery.

Things to Consider When Looking at This Painting:
Foreground vs Background: When I look at this painting, it's the flower that draws me in (as intended), with it's brighter tones and colors. But after a while my eye is pulled out and around the background, and into all the detail that's there. Notice how the background isn't just filling empty space, but is adding its own value to the painting. But at the same time how it's not fighting the main focus of the painting for attention.
