From the Artist: "Van Gogh painted subjects from his world around him and used the color yellow ochre and some bright colors in his compositions. It's said he liked earth colors. He used the Iris as a subject in a colourful composition which is admirable. Iris Garden is inspired by Van Gogh's iris and by a photo I took last spring."
From the Painting Guide: I think this is a great composition, with the flat dark area being prevented from dominating the painting by the large area of bright blooms and multitude of greens. The one iris stretching into the dark provides a splash of color that units the elements. But I also find my eyes keep coming back to the tiny leaves in the bottom right-hand corner which seem to belong to some other plant, not the irises. I'd be tempted to crop this off.
