From the Artist: "Here's my painting of Festus Hagan from the TV Series Gunsmoke. I took a photo of the TV screen and then used that as a reference to put together this pic. This is the way I paint, but many people who have seen this image say they are reminded of Van Gogh, I think it's the hat."
From the Painting Guide: Well I for one thought it was Van Gogh, until I read your statement! And then, thinking about it, I realised that Van Gogh generally painted himself with a reddish beard. I agree that it's the hat, but also the eyes studying something so intently and looking slightly crazed. The red and black swirls of the background pull your eye right into the face, to the white eyeballs. I really love this painting, it's got such a vibrancy and sense of personality, which is what I need in a portrait.
