From the Artist: I thought I would introduce a little bit of humor in to my painting which I think Van Gogh would appreciate. I am a great fan of Van Gogh and if I was to make a wish it would be that he could see that his paintings are now very popular.

From the Painting Guide: Being both a Van Gogh fan and a cat lover, your painting really made me smile. And I can well imagine that when Van Gogh lived in Arles, cats did wander into the Yellow House for scraps and mice.

Things to Consider When Looking at This Painting:
'Translating' a Painting: Take a look at Van Gogh's chair (note: this page allows you to zoom right into the painting to see the texture, but unfortunately, the link seems to work only in Internet Explorer web browser) and you'll see how Marie has adapted the original, translating it through her eyes into her own painting.

Van Gogh did this quite a bit himself, working from black-and-white prints or etching by artists such as Millet (see Snow-covered Field with a Harrow) and Rembrandt (see The Raising of Lazarus).
