From the Artist: Vincent Van Gogh is my favorite Master Artist. His work inspires me. The way he put colors together was unbelievably perfect. To paint a painting with his style in mind is thrilling.
I enjoyed creating this painting using a resemblance of a photo from the artist's reference photos collection. I experimented with brush strokes and color combination keeping in mind that Vincent's later color choices were red, yellow, orange, green and blue, although there are other colors such as pink and gray.
I have discovered that with each painting project that I complete I retain something of what I've learned. My creativity is growing and my style is expanding. I can't wait to see where I end up!

Painting from Photos vs Painting from Life: When it comes to the debate about whether it's good or bad (some would go as far as to say "evil") to paint from photos, my take is that it really doesn't matter what you use to inspire a painting, or as a starting point, it's the final result that counts.
Van Gogh may not have had access to digital reference photos to paint from, but he certainly used prints of paintings as reference for painting his own versions. It's this 'translation' of the photo (or print) into a language of paint, of brushmarks and colors, as Jane has done here, that presents unique opportunities to a painter. Some things can only be done in paint.
