From the Artist: This project was fun and very informative. In researching the Vincent Van Gogh website you recommended, I learned some of his history and loved looking at all his paintings. His "Trees and Shrubs" watercolor is what I patterned my painting after. I used mostly colors from his palette that he used in his later years. The scene is one from my childhood home in Minnesota, USA. The farm is now a wildlife refuge and the trees grow wild and some are dieing.

From the Painting Guide: I'm delighted to hear you enjoyed the project, and that you found a Van Gogh painting that inspired you to get the "Vincent treatment" to a landscape scene of your own. We tend to think of Van Gogh as working in oil paints and charcoal, but he did also use watercolor and pen/ink. The way you've painted your sky, in particular, makes me think of a Vincent pen and ink piece.

Things to Consider When Looking at This Painting:
Backgrounds: Look at how the background in this painting is painted, how it appears to continue behind the trees. A background should be just that, something at the back of the subject of a painting, behind the subject. It shouldn't be painted so that it appears to go around the subject, or stop and start at the subject.

Now compare the brushwork in the sky and the foliage, how the marks change in length, not just color. There's a similarity in the brushwork that gives the composition unity, but also a difference to make the trees stand out from the sky background.
