From the Artist: I chose this as a subject matter for Valentine's day because I wanted to paint something meaningful for my husband. We were married in 2009 and used a black-and-white photo of pebbles with two metallic hearts as the backdrop to our invitations, so the image brings back memories of all the preparation that took place for our special day. I toyed with the idea of having two hearts intertwined, but I like the symbolism of us being as one and also thought the composition was better with the single main subject.
I'm not sure if you have noticed but there are three heart shaped rocks in the background, one for each of my children. These rocks are not overlapped by any others in the composition to show their importance to us. I used a glazing medium to achieve the form of the rocks and metallic heart. I'm a bit unsure as to whether to stop at this stage but wanted to submit it before Valentines day, I still feel that the painting looks a little flat.
