From the Artist: I'm a painter, living and working in Montreal, Quebec. The past winter I have concentrated largely on paintings trees growing on Mount Royal, a lovely park in the heart of the city, designed by Frederick Olmsted, and along the historic Lachine Canal.

In this painting, along with the others in the series, I have attempted to catch the spirit of the sombre, sleeping trees in our bone-chilling winters, in an abstract, deeply textured, and carved manner rather than an outright representation.

From the Painting Guide: Texture is hard to photograph, so I can't comment on that, but in terms of abstracted trees conveying a sense of a really cold day, I think this is a lovely painting overall. The one aspect I'm not sure about is the white tree trunks in the foreground -- my mind wants these to be reflections on a frozen river, but looking at the trees above they're not.

Things to Consider When Looking at This Painting:
• Color: The painting is done with a limited number of colors, and with quite a narrow range of tones. This works well for conveying a sense of a cold wintry scene, because in mid-winter in a harsh climate there isn't much color in nature, but what there is does have subtle variations.

Look at the bottom third of the painting for a while and you'll see the subtle variations from white, through blue, to purple. Then look at the "sky", and you'll see the same variations in lighter tones and with even more subtle variation. This forms a striking contrast to the strong band of dark brown, with the white tree trunks unifying the elements of the painting.
