Tree Painting Project

"Autumn" by Trevor Priest. Acrylic.

From the Artist: I have not been painting for long and all I know is from reading books and the About.com Painting website. I am not sure what category of painting this would fall under, but it was inspired by a visit to Exmoor in the autumn and was just my idea of what appeared to me.

From the Painting Guide: If you're painting an emotional response to something, it could be classified as Expressionist; if you're using colors that are unrealistic but seem 'right', it could be classified as Fauvist. The absence of strong perspective and the way the black and brushwork on the trees has been used could put it into a Japanese or Chinese style of painting. But ultimately I don't think it matters where it might fall. What's most important is that you were inspired to paint an interpretation of a landscape that's personal to you.

Things to Consider When Looking at This Painting:
Use of Color: The color in this painting has a very strong impact on the viewer, demanding your attention. Often red is the most dominant color, but in this instance the use of yellow on top means it doesn't control your attention. Note how the colors are generally not blended or mixed, but used pure.

Composition: Look at the painting in terms of blocks of color and you'll see how these form lines that draw your eye into and across the painting: the triangle of white at the top; the dark triangle on the center left; the swerve of yellow; and the not-quite a semi-circle of red in the foreground.
