From the Artist: I have never had any art lessons or any art training but have always wanted to paint. I have recently moved to Ireland and the peace and quiet is the perfect atmosphere to learn.
I love the countryside and my painting seems to portray the quietness of a winter's afternoon. The trees look cold and bare and although I did not set out to paint any particular kind of tree, these ones from my imagination seem to be just right.
From the Painting Guide: Ireland is a country with magnificent landscapes, so I'm not surprised it's inspired you to paint! When the weather's a bit warmer, no doubt you'll be venturing out and about sketchbook in hand! Or maybe investigate the offerings of the Irish School of Landscape Painting or similar?
Things to Consider When Looking at This Painting:
Color: The glorious array of blues and grays in this painting give it a very strong sense of wintry cold, emphasized by the bare branches of the trees and the darkness of the distant view.
Direction of Light: The shadows on the ground suggest that the light is either shining from the bottom left or top right, yet neither works with every tree in the painting. Having a direction of light that is consistent is a crucial element of landscape painting, regardless of which direction you select (see: Landscape Painting: Which Direction is the Sun Shining From?).
