From the Artist: This painting is of a palm outside of my bedroom window, in Queensland Australia. We seldom have rain here and the sky is always blue, giving the trees a very sharp definition. I started painting five years ago. I attended watercolor classes and nearly gave up in despair. Then I chose acrylics and found a cooler less airy place to paint!

From the Painting Guide: I know a lot of people start with watercolor paints, but I personally think acrylics are a better choice as it's easier to "fix" things in a painting, or to paint totally over something that's not working. Watercolor paints can produce beautiful results, but can also be quite unforgiving when it comes to reworking parts of a painting. Looking at this painting, I'd have to say that you and acrylics obviously get on very well together!

Things to Consider When Looking at This Painting:
Composition: Not placing a subject centrally on a canvas is one of the basic rules of painting composition (aka fried egg composition), but like all rules is meant to be broken occasionally. Doing so here works so well because of the various fronds (leaves) on the palm pull the viewer's eye from the center out across the canvas in multiple directions (note how the fronds are not the same on either side).
