April Painting Project: Trees

From Marion Boddy-Evans, About.com

Tree Painting Project© Gail Ribas 2002, 14 x 11", watercolor on Yupo, painted plein air
From the Artist: I'm in love with watercolor. The "fluidity" and unpredictability of it is so exciting. I try to let the water and pigment find its own way. I usually work on regular watercolor paper but the slick surface of Yupo makes you loosen up since the paint is much harder to control.

From the Painting Guide: Phew! Watercolor can be tricky enough on paper, never mind on a slick surface. You're certainly up for a challenge aren't you! My favurite part of this painting is the tree trunk just to the right of the center, which has a great sense of bark and being anchored to the ground.

Things to Consider When Looking At This Painting:
• Level of detail: The leaves of the tree just to the left of center don't fit in with the rest of the painting – there's comparatively little detail in these. The large tree trunk to the left of this has a 'lost' left edge half-way up which suddenly becomes 'found' again, making the trunk top heavy. The gray-blue background appears all one tone, making the it very flat.
