Trees are often relegated to a minor element in a landscape painting. This project's challenge is to make a tree (or group of trees) the subject of a painting. What season and what kind of tree is up to you. It could be a tree with newly emerged bright green leaves, an apricot tree laden with ripe fruit, a tree whose leaves are turning yellow and red with autumn, bare winter branches in bright winter sunlight or covered in snow. A grand old tree with a treehouse or a small, newly planted specimen. Something exotic like a baobab or something common like a pine.

Many artist have made studies of trees, and quite a number paintings. The Impressionist Claude Monet painted the poplars that lined the River Epte, not far from his home, Giverny, more than 20 times. As conditions changed during the day, he would change the canvas he was working on.
