From the Artist: This is my first submission and I'm very excited to be doing so! I found it interesting using the color red in a way that does not over power. I'm fond of red. I'm an Impressionist painter and am largely self taught. It's nice to be connected with others with like
interests.
From the Painting Guide: Great to have your submission! I find it fabulous that people do share their paintings, and are willing to subject them to my comments. I think there's a lot to be learned from seeing what other people have done with a project theme, the different styles and approaches.
Things to Consider When Looking at This Painting:
Perspective: Notice how the angle the table is painted is different to that of the bowl and fruit, how the table is "tipped up", but the fruit is "flat". This type of varying perspective treatment of the elements in a still life is very much something Cezanne liked doing.
A Sense of Form: I'm a little surprised, given how you've used varying tones to create a sense of form on the grapes and bowl, that the lemons lack something similar. I'd use a thin glaze of the green to do this.
Background: What you do with a background, how plain or complex it is, is very much a matter of personal preference. In this painting, the left- and right-hand sections of the background are too different for me. The loose color on the right ends with the grapes, there isn't even a hint of it on the left. If it's intended as shadow, then I'd say it's not solid enough where the table ends, that the table edge ought to be painted as a soft edge, so it "dissolves" somewhat in the shadow.
