From the Artist: I used a reference photo for my work and using artistic license, I wanted to show the wide expanse of yellow fields, pretty blue sky to give the feeling of warmth and color associated with Tuscany. Another goal was trying to get a sense of distance in the painting with the middleground houses and trees. Although the middleground elements cut the painting in half, I'm not displeased with this generally frowned upon composition. I'm giving this one as a gift to a friend.
From the Painting Guide: This painting had an immediate feeling of the intense sunshine and saturated colors of southern Mediterranean Europe to me when I saw it, so I wasn't surprised when I read your statement to discover it was a scene in Tuscany.
Things to Consider When Looking at This Painting:
Composition: Rules exist to be bent and broken... though it works only if you know the reasoning behind the rule and the dangers the rule aims to overcome. So here breaking the rule works because the buildings and tree visually link with the background and foreground. They stretch up into the sky over the distant mountains and link visually with the greens in the foreground. The subtle pinks and blues in the foreground also help unify the composition by linking it with the sky.
Also look at the placement and shape of the white cloud in the sky. How this enhances the sense of wide space and guides your eye across the composition.
