From the Artist: I sketched and painted the scene on site in watercolour, then did the acrylic one at home from the sketch. My aim was to capture the lazy atmosphere of this small quay with the idle boats bobbing and lapping in the water, on finishing I realised that there was nothing to break the shoreline so I painted in some fence posts for a quick fix, then the middle looked a bit empty so I added the small ferry boat. Now I don't know if it all looks bits and pieces.

From the Painting Guide: I'd definitely say you've conveyed a sense of a lazy waterside atmosphere, where the boats are waiting for people to appear and get busy. The various elements fit together for me; it doesn't feel bitty.

What does worry me is that the slipway in the foreground and the water are so similar in tone and hue. The two join together as I look at the painting (particularly if I squint at it), confusing my interpretation of what's going on. Given the dark tone of the sandy foreground I would be inclined to darken the tone of the slipway, especially the bit closest to the viewer.

Things to Consider When Looking at This Painting:
Horizon Line: It's most likely just the result of cropping the photo, but check the horizon line in the water is indeed straight.
