From the Artist: I've always been attracted to wide panoramas that suggest change or movement. This particular scene is a compilation of several photographs I've taken of rustic buildings in beautiful settings. I placed the strong sunlight so that it peeks out from behind, and reflects slightly in the water on the left. My goal was to create a mood of impending change occurring in the sky and water, in contrast with the strong, dense forest.
From the Painting Guide: I think it's a strikingly dramatic painting with a fabulous sense of weather coming in, of imminent rain. Lovely use of wet-on-wet to create that sky!
Things to Consider When Looking at This Painting:
Wet-on-Wet: Look at how the sky has been painted wet-on-wet, with colors allowed to bleed into one another. To me it enhances the sense of change and movement in the weather. Look at the contrast of the hard edges of the horizon line on the sea, the house and tree trunks. How these sharp edges allow these elements to stand out clearly from the background.
