From the Artist: This project sparked my first ever attempt at a landscape. I really enjoyed the long layout -- which provoked long, sweeping strokes of colour and a huge sense of freedom. I did this painting in about four hours, which is about 60 less than my usual meticulous work! I will definitely try to carry the looseness, the freedom, and the colour exploration forward into my future endeavours.
From the Painting Guide: It's always a thrill to hear a project has motivated someone to try something new, and even more so that it was enjoyed! I really like an extreme landscape format because of the sense of space it can convey, and I think you've used it to great effect.
I like the painterly style of this painting; there's a lovely sense of movement to the waves and clouds. The dark, distant band of sea is a little static by contrast, but then again it makes for a change of pace. Maybe the tone just wants to shift a bit more from front to back in this area?
Things to Consider When Looking at This Painting:
Composition: The strong lines in this composition, from the left-hand edge to the right, work with the format of the canvas to emphasize the sense of looking over a stretch of ocean. But if every element in the painting went from edge to edge in a straight line like the horizon and the wave in front of it do, the composition would be boring.
Having the mountains in the distance end and the front wave at an angle make the composition dynamic. You're pulled into the scene for a longer or closer look rather than taking it all in with a single glance. I would perhaps create a little more variation in the top edge of the further wave to further enhance this, perhaps have a few areas where the wave hasn't broken so fully.
