From the Artist: Fall is my favorite time of the year, and while looking out my front window at a maple sapling trying to look as glorious as its older relatives do, I start to ponder how I could convey its beauty. I decided on painting negative shapes, focusing on the beautiful colors of fall. When I finished my husband said that, to him, it looked like leaves blowing in the wind.
This project also allowed me to continue with the exploration of the red pigments, as well as a new technique.
From the Painting Guide: This painting has a vibrancy to it, both from the diagonal composition and the colors. And I agree, it looks like the leaves have been blown into place by the wind (and got stuck in some wet paint?).
Things to Consider When Looking at This Painting:
Composition: Notice the negative space in the composition, the 'empty spaces' in the bottom left and top right corners. If these had been painted too, the result would be a painting with a different feeling to it, more contained and restrained.
Also notice how negative space has been used to paint the leaves themselves, how the sense of their presence is created by the colors around the leaves.
