From the Artist: My thoughts are how funny it is in Florida that you could go through a dark storm and then, after it has passed, the sun comes out with destruction coming on the next big wave.
From the Painting Guide: To me the strong, saturated colors you've used convey a sense of the sunshine I associate with Florida, and the colors in the wave on the left are those I visualize of the region's coast. By juxtaposing these with the red streaks in the wave and the dark wave on the right-hand side, you've created a sense of unease in the scene. I know you said the red streaks were sail boat getting caught up in the surge, but it could be a deck chair, towel, blood... it's visually intriguing and I like it in the painting.
Things to Consider When Looking at This Painting:
Composition: Spend a moment tracing the main lines in this painting, see how your eye is pulled up from the bottom to the crest of the wave and into the center of the painting. It's done with directional brush marks, color, and the overall design.
Mixing Colors: Don't be afraid to mix colors on the canvas as you're painting. Yes, you do need to be careful you don't overdo it as too many colors together will produce a gray or brown, but done with a bit of restraint it can produce glorious 'complex' color. Just look at the glorious turquoise-greens on the lower edge of the wave crest, blending together as they've been pulled up.
