From the Artist: The painted doll in this picture is an attempt to convey the plight of women through the ages. Supposedly liberated from the bonds of the past she is more vulnerable than ever, a prisoner of the never ceasing demands of contemporary society, her hopes and fears, and the fate of her inescapable mortality.
Who knows what emotions her expressionless mask conceals? The red tones of the painted backdrop symbolize both anger and passion, but red is also the color of blood. Bound by the ties of her destiny, she is a creature of many parts -- daughter, mistress, mother, wife. Above all she is a nurturer, the giver of life.
From the Painting Guide: Wow, that's sure a lot of symbolism packed in. I find it intriguing that the puppet strings are so loose, almost as if the puppet master has let go.
Things to Consider When Looking at This Painting:
Symbolism: You may intend people looking at your painting to see certain symbolism in it, to interpret elements in a particular way, but you can't dictate that they do (short of adding labels underneath each symbol on the actual painting, which would be a bit OTT). A good painting stands whether or not someone gets the symbolism. Just think of all the symbolism in paintings from previous centuries that we no longer recognize... but we still enjoy the art.
