From the Artist: This is an oil on board that I did early last year. Though I am not madly keen on the boats, I like the sky so I thought it might make a suitable entry for this month's project.
From the Painting Guide: It is indeed a lovely sky; I like the sense of a windy day it and the sea create.
Things to Consider When Looking at This Painting:
The Boats: Looking a the angle of the yachts' masts, the two nearest the viewer (red and blue sails) are more upright than the two further back. But if they're leading the race, then I'd expect them to be going as fast, and the masts to be at the same angle. Also, they're overlapping just a little ("kissing", see Tips for Painting Composition), which often results in an uneasy feeling in a painting solved by overlapping them more definitely.
I'd be tempted to paint out the red and blue yachts. Rather a drastic change, I know, but then it gives the other two boats space to be sailing into, adding to the feeling of their being blown along rapidly. And I'd be tempted to change the small boat at the back into a small orange-yellow buoy, for a small splash of color.
