Whether you paint storm clouds, thunder clouds with streaks of lightning, pink sunset clouds, gold sunrise clouds, low-level clouds on a mountain, or the tops of clouds as seen from an plane, is up to you. The challenge of this project is to elevate clouds to the center of focus in a painting, so they're not just an element in a landscape or cityscape painting.
For tips on painting realistic-looking clouds, see Tips on Painting Clouds.
For descriptions of the types of clouds that occur and their characteristics, see Types of Clouds, Their Characteristics, and How to Paint Them.
For short painting video demos, see Watercolor Painting Video: How to Paint Clouds and the Painting Clouds Demo by a mural artist.
If you're looking for cloud reference photos that you're free to use in paintings, you'll find a collection here: Reference Photos for Artists: Clouds.
If you'd like to learn more about the various types of clouds and how they form, check out the Weather section of About.com (with answers to questions such as How Do Clouds Form?) and the Cloud Appreciation Society.
Submission: Please note that new submissions for this project gallery are currently not being accepted. Check the list of monthly painting projects to see what this month's project is. This doesn't mean you shouldn't tackle this particular project, just that if you want feedback on your project painting you need to post a photo of it in the Painting Forum (in the Painting Projects Folder).
