From the Artist: I had a very hard time finding an urban scene that I wanted to paint, so I did this backyard scene from the desert community of Indio, near Palm Springs, CA. I hope this qualifies as an abstracted urban scene! I focused on colors and shapes to capture the image. This is the first painting I’ve done in this style and it was really fun and I am planning to do more.
From the Painting Guide: It does indeed qualify as you've used the fundamental shapes and colors to construct the painting and a swimming pool is definitely an urban element. You're not a David Hockney fan by any chance are you? The solid colors remind me of his paintings involving pools e.g. Bigger Splash and Peter Getting Out of Nick's Pool.
I like the way the composition leads my eye up the painting with that strong curve of the pool's edge, then links up with the rooftop above it by being a similar color/tone. I do, however, find the detail on the figure is lost and think it'd benefit from having a bit more shadow or darker tone on it.
