From the Artist: This project was a big challenge for me. I've never painted an city scene before and the urban environment is so full of detail that I had a hard time simplifying.
This painting is intended to show a city abstracted by the maze of roads and bridges that you must go through to enter it. Originally the painting was done in grey tones but it seemed too flat so I added blue over most of it and then orange/burnt sienna for contrast and heat.
From the Painting Guide: I'm surprised to hear you found this a challenge! Looking at your painting I would've said you had a natural affinity for finding striking pattern in spaghetti junctions, and for abstraction.
I like the suggestion of city peaking through between the roads. Not only does it pull my eye into the painting for a closer look, but it also provides a context. This transforms the shapes into the foreground into something concrete (apologies for the bad pun!) or recognizable.
I like the colors and tones, the blue which feels cold and the dark night-time sky contrasting with the oranges which feels like rust and dirty. The various strong lines, both straight and curved, as well as the pattern of circular lights, pull and push my eye across the composition. I find the composition interesting and compelling; the pattern and rhythm pleasing. I find it appealing every time I've looked at it.
