From the Artist: From a detailed photo of the famous Zuiderkerk in Amsterdam, I painted the focus monument with some detail. However, in this night scene, the true essence and ambiance of Amsterdam is captured abstractly in the waterway - the lights, buildings, trees, cars and boats and their reflections.
From the Painting Guide: The saturated blues and yellows remind me of Van Gogh's Café Terrace at Night painting (though it doesn't have his style of starry sky!). The composition leads the eye in to the distance and up to the focal point, the church. I wonder whether it doesn't want another boat and car on the left-hand side, going off the edge of the composition like it does on the right? it seems a little neat and tidy...
