From the Artist: I took the reference photo for this painting during a visit to Daytona Beach (Florida, USA) in May. I noticed that Daytona is two separate cities: the new is on the west (beach) side of Atlantic Avenue and is constantly changing; and the old is on the east side of Atlantic Avenue and is basically unchanged. The yellow building on the right is representative of the one-storey architecture during the early years, while the high rises in the distance are typical of the evolution of the town in the last 50 years.

From the Painting Guide: Compositionally, the two pillars (or maybe tree trunks) in the center divide the old and new too. There's a danger with these being so central that the painting with feel like two halves that don't belong together, but I think this is overcome by the narrowing of the road which has a strong sense of continuing behind the building in the foreground.

I wonder whether the scale of the brushwork in the distant sky wants to be smaller? At the moment it's longer than most of that in the foreground. If it were even smaller than what's in the more distant buildings, it would enhance the feeling of distance in the painting. That may, of course, not be something you want.
