From the Artist: I love rooftop vistas and was keen to develop the idea of jumbling all the geometric forms one often sees. I kept the shapes vague and dark and wanted to contrast the main body with a sharp area of bright sky.

From the Painting Guide: Felt tip pen... were you cheating by drawing rather than painting fine lines? Only joking! There is no cheating in painting, there are just multiple methods for getting the results you want. Just be careful with what pen you use, that the ink in it is lightfast (if it is, it should say so on the label).

I think the contrast between the light and dark works well. The area of light tone enhances the few highlights within the dark, it provides an space that's restful on the eye, and the strong curve is an interesting contrast to the straight lines and sharp angles that dominate the painting. I find myself drawn in by what's going on in the purple. The shapes and color create a sense of mystery that I want to investigate. Though I do keep seeing the two chimneys or towers in the foreground as a pair of fingers (with rather short nails and prominent knuckles, granted).
