From the Artist: I have painted four fictitious cityscapes for this project and can see there could be many more to come. This was a difficult project for me... I had no idea I knew so little about this subject. The essence I was trying to portray is a seemingly dark, quiet city with some lights on in various buildings that evoke mystery as to what is going on in those places.
From the Painting Guide: Of these two paintings, I prefer the top one. The foreground in the lower painting is too chaotic for me; I don't get the feeling of buildings from them, and there's too much of a sameness about the shapes. I also prefer the way the buildings in top painting goes off the edge of the canvas, giving a sense of the scene continuing. I like the muted colors, the pattern of buildings and windows, the way people are not shown though the lights suggest there must be occupants in some of the buildings.
Part of me wonders whether the negative space above the buildings should be there are all, or maybe just a sliver rather than so much. Hold up your hand or a piece of paper to crop it off and see what you think.
