From the Artist: This is my attempt to paint my studio in a style similar to that of Matisse. I used blue rather than red in order to make it different and chose blue because it's a colour that I love. The layout of the window and some furniture is strangely similar to that shown in the Red Studio ... this is my dining room where I paint.

I underpainted in yellow and then painted over in blue, allowing the yellow to show through to delineate the furnishings. Things that were important to me (pets, my work, plants, afghan, urn, wood carving, and painting materials, cup of tea etc) were painted in full colour. I avoided using yellow for anything other than the outlines.

I originally didn't like or understand Matisse's work, but having read information and looked at examples, I can now say that I enjoyed doing this painting and have gained an insight into some important art history.

From the Painting Guide: I particularly like the strong curve of the table in the foreground, filling the space, and the way the dog's looking at how the portrait is developing along with me. It gives a sense of standing in this studio.

In terms of playing with perspective, I wonder if the line of the floor/wall beneath the chairs wants to be there? Take a look and see what how you feel. I think I find the version where only part of the line is there the most intriguing.
