From the Artist: This painting was meant to be in the style of Matisse's Red Room. I wanted to highlight the paintings and the painting process with color, and leave the structures defined with only lines. For my underpainting I used a lightened yellow ochre and pink, and then to my surprise I made a last minute adjustment from a blue room to a crimson room. The brush strokes, which don't show up in the digital photo, add depth to the room.
It was difficult to decide what to do about the windows. I didn't want to highlight them with detail like the paintings. However, leaving them completely lightened yellow ochre didn't seem true to Matisse and painting them red seemed like it would make them disappear. My compromise shows them as a light source but without too much detail.
