From the Artist: I really enjoyed painting my studio in Matisse's style. It was challenging for me, but it made me paint without always trying to have everything perfect, and just to paint as I saw it freely without getting out the t-square and triangle.
I did have fun, but it surely wasn't easy. I started out doing the project in colored pencils on red paper, but once I had it down on paper, it was hard to make corrections. So, then, I decided to go with oil on canvas.
Overall, I'm happy with the piece, but eager to move on to your next project you have lined up. This is my first painting submission, so I'm excited!
From the Painting Guide: I'm delighted to be able to add your painting to this project's gallery, and pleased to hear you had fun creating it. Matisse makes it look deceptively simple and easy, but there are a lot of decisions to be made never mind the actual painting. Such as deciding what to include and leave out, what to emphasize by having it in color and what to reduce to mere outlines.
I think this is a great painting, and while you may have struggled creating it, the end result doesn't reflect this. (One of Matisse's aims was to make his paintings reflect the joys of life, rather than its struggles.) It feels as I've stepped through the door into your studio.
I particularly like the way you've done the drawers on the right-hand side. With minimal line a viewer can't help but know it's a chest of drawers, not just a rectangle. I'd be tempted not to have the edge to the drawing board as I don't think it adds to a viewer's understanding of what it is.
One thing I think you need to look at is how you've aligned the paintings on the two walls. They're aligned with the edges of the canvas you're painting on, rather than the walls on which they're hanging. In this photo I've edited your painting to change the alignment; take a look to see how you feel about it. (Ultimately, remember, it's your studio and you decide how and where things are.)
