The challenge of this project is to paint an expressive self-portrait rather than a mere likeness. A portrait that conveys personality and/or emotion or facial expression, done in a painterly style that celebrates the paint you're using rather than trying to be a photograph.
There are many reasons for painting self-portraits, not least of which is that you can study your facial features for as long as you like without worrying about tiring the model, you can observe right up close, and there's no-one else who might complain about the final painting.
Set up a mirror either attached to your easel or near by; you ideally want to be able to look in the mirror and then paint without having to turn your head or body. A small mirror tile works well.
