From the Artist: Even though my family wasn't convinced it looks like me, I think it does express something about me! I really enjoyed doing this. I don't want to say very much about it, I'm hoping the images can speak for themselves. (Yes, I've been a nurse for 29 years and an avid gardener since I was six year old).

From the Painting Guide: I think that if getting an accurate likeness is the sole purpose of a self-portrait, you may as well use a camera. A painted portrait has far more potential, especially a self-portrait where the your painting style is an integral part of the result.

I would imagine you have a little more color variation in your face and that your hand isn't really that tiny, but I don't need that degree of realism in a painting, my brain can interpret what it's seeing as painting style. I like this self-portrait for its sense of personality, of a particular individual.

Things to Consider When Looking at This Painting:
Background/Symbolism: I like the way you've surrounded yourself with things that relate very specifically to your life and your personality. It adds such a sense of who you are, what you enjoy in life. It's really fulfilling the potential of a painted portrait.

Composition: The continuation of the rose into the right-hand side creates a unity between two quite different areas of the painting. This division of sides is echoed in the two half outfits, which again are unified through color.
