From the Artist: I decided to leap into one more attempt at self-portraiture. I tried to loosen up and be less concerned about detail, concentrating more on overall form.
From the Painting Guide: There are some lovely things happening in this pastel painting. I particularly like the loose way you've painted the jacket; it's got a great sense of form and texture, done in a painterly style. This also makes a nice contrast to the smooth, blended feel to the skin. One thing I'd still to do the painting is to use the broad edge of an eraser to clean up the background a bit.
Things to Consider When Looking at This Painting:
Skin tones: Compared to the color of your hands, I think the color on your face is a bit pink -- it looks to me as if you're overheating a little in that warm jacket. (Also, watch out for the size of hands compared to a face -- they're surprisingly similar in size.)
Working Loosely: As a step towards painting the face in similar, looser style as the jacket, how about starting with a sheet of paper that works as skin color. Then you don't have to first blend the skin colors, but can just loosely suggest the facial features and a bit of shadow in the face area.
