Painting Project: Limited Color Palette

This seascape was painted in acrylics, using only four colors: lemon yellow, burnt sienna, phthalo blue, and titanium white.

Between the previous photo and this one I continued glazing and scrubbing with the phthalo blue, burnt sienna, and titanium white. I'd do a bit, let it dry, then continue. If you don't give the paint time to dry, it's easy to end up with mud rather than color, as your multiple layers of paint get physically mixed together on the canvas.

This is as finished as this painting is going to get. I found myself fiddling with a bit here and a bit there, which I've learned the hard way is a recipe for messing things up completely. So while there are still things I don't quite like about this painting as it is now, I'm done with it.

So rather than 'fixing' the horizon which looks skew because of the hills, and 'fixing' the shadow on the edge of the dune vegetation, I'll instead start working on a new painting of the same scene.

If you'd like to create your own version of this painting, which was done for the , here's a printable composition outline as a starting point.
