I also use my sketchbook to record thoughts about paintings that I have; I find it's better to get them down when I have them, rather than try and remember them later. Try as I might, I never remember everything!
Looking at the Santa Maria della Salute at night got me thinking about painting a night-time cityscape. What would be the best format -- landscape or portrait? Where would I position the horizon, high up so there was plenty of reflected light in water, or low down so there would be lots of dark sky?
