Time Out's guidebook to Venice described the city as "on the whole, an exceptionally safe place at any time of day or night". I admit, though, it did feel odd to wander along quiet streets at night, just two of us, after years of living in places where you would never dream of doing so! But don't stay in your hotel or apartment room at night or you'll miss out on all those great reflections of light in the water. Or book a room with a spectacular view.

Once again this is the view from the Santa Maria della Salute church. I've written notes on the sketch to remind myself of specific things, such as the fact that the tiny light on the front of a gondola creates a surprisingly strong reflection.
