The main line in this sketch -- the outline of the buildings -- was done continuously, with an eye on the subject, rather than on my sketchbook. Each building in Venice has so much detail on it, that lined up next to each other it's all initially a little intimidating. So my intention here was to observe only the shape the buildings made against the sky, to simplify a complex scene.
Once I'd put down that line, I then added the poles and gondolas, then quickly painted in an indication of the water, sky, buildings, and the green of the campanile (tower) at St Mark's (it's the tallest in Venice, so often pops into sight).
The result certainly isn't going to win any prizes, but that wasn't the point. It was just an exercise in familiarizing myself with a scene, of relaxing with the unfamiliar cityscape.
