Guide Review - Art Psalms by Alex Grey
"Life Is Your Ultimate Artwork; Make it a Sacred Offering"
-- Alex Grey
Art Psalms sets a standard for artists and art lovers that places the responsibility for creation in the artist’s lap while instilling the belief that we can make a difference. I have not read a more powerful book on timeless spiritual concepts.
Whether a believer or non believer, one could not help but be inspired by the sheer beauty of this volume, and the social heartbeat of this book. It is at once timeless and timely. I recommend this book on an intellectual, sensual, and spiritual level, and feel no artist should be without it.
The page spreads typically have artwork on one page and verse on the other, though some are intermixed. The Art Index contains thumbnails of each piece with titles and page numbers, making it easy to locate images within the book.
The artwork is eye-grabbing, spirit-quickening, expressive-surrealism in a style uniquely Alex Grey's. Reminiscent of Leonardo Da Vinci's mastery, his anatomical plotting brings to mind mirrors of astronomical maps, connecting the body, mind and soul to the oneness of all, through synaptically charged points of light. The images pulse with light and life. Each tenderly rendered vision is accompanied by written timeless truths. One is serenaded and lifted by songs of the ages as told by Grey. The verses themselves seem to follow the illuminated body seamlessly, honoring humanity and the universe.
Art Psalms is as easily read straight through, as it is in small, exquisitely digestible snippets. Verses may be used as daily meditations or inspirations. In either case, it is a book to be revisited time and time again. I challenge anyone to come away from this book with less than a desire and ability to begin creating the art and the world they dream of.
