What Do the Painting Star Ratings in Reviews Mean?

By Marion Boddy-Evans, About.com

The reviews on About.com Painting rate each item, whether a book, DVD, art material, or painting exhibition, on a basis of one to five stars. Here's what the stars mean:

1 Star: Bottom of the barrel.
2 Stars: Eclipsed by some of the other options available. Or overpriced.
3 Stars: Books -- Perhaps not the most inspired in terms of writing, presentation, or quality of images, but the quality of information makes up for this. Art Materials -- Not a top-of-the-range product, but reasonable quality and/or good for the price range.
3.5 Stars: Nicely done in terms of quality, information, ideas, and/or value for money.
4 Stars: Stands out from the crowd.
5 Stars: Exceptional/Highly enjoyable, will be inspirational and rewarding reading, using, or viewing.

An additional half-star may be awarded at the review writer's discretion.
