Value or Tone in an Underpainting

A helpful painting tip submitted by a fellow artist.

By Marion Boddy-Evans, About.com

For a successful underpainting, you should model your subject with three distinct values or tones (low, middle, high), but these should remain overall quite light in value. The darkest value should still be only about a middle value. Sometimes you can get very caught up in the underpainting, and forget that you're just laying the ground for further layers, so you don't want the underpainting to get too dark too soon."
