Start with Mid-Tones Not Highlights

A helpful tip to add to your painting knowledge.

By Marion Boddy-Evans, About.com

I've just started painting with oils and one thing my prof said that has helped me enormously is to paint everything everything in mid-tones with (possibly) slightly lighter areas rather than making the mistake of painting in the lightest areas right away. Then you come in with your darks and lights at the same time to define the shape, and lastly, the highlights. Since I learned to paint via watercolor this is entirely opposite of what I used to do, but when I tried it, it worked.
