Figure Painting Tip: Using Dark Backgrounds for Portraits

A tip to add to your figure painting knowledge.

By Marion Boddy-Evans, About.com

When painting portraits, paint the canvas in a dark background color, like a burnt umber and black mix. This will help add shadows and contrast. I do it to all my portrait paintings as this method helps me not have to put in the shadows in the faces, I just have to layer my light colors.
