Storing and Using Leftover Acrylic Paint for an Underpainting

A helpful painting tip submitted by a fellow artist.

By Marion Boddy-Evans, About.com

At the end of each painting or session, don't throw away your excess acrylic paint that you have squeezed out. Remove any skin and scrape the remaining acrylic colors into a sealable jar.

After numerous projects you will have quite a bit of paint (in a mixture of colors) in your jar. Blend them together, add white if you wish, and you have paint for your underpaintings that will harmonize well with your particular color palette. You can also use it in your initial covering of your canvas or board if you aren't keen on always having a white base.
